History
Kingston’s history dates back to 1692, when the city was established as a settlement for survivors of the devastating earthquake that destroyed much of nearby Port Royal, then one of the Caribbean’s busiest trading ports. The city was named Kingston, and its location along one of the world's largest natural harbours helped it quickly develop into an important centre for shipping, commerce, and trade. In 1872, Kingston officially became Jamaica’s capital, replacing Spanish Town, as its growing port and commercial importance made it the island’s leading urban centre. Â
Today, Kingston is known as the cultural, commercial, and entertainment heart of Jamaica, with a rich connection to the island’s music, art, and history. Popular attractions include the Bob Marley Museum, Devon House, the National Gallery of Jamaica, Emancipation Park, and the historic waterfront. Visitors can also explore nearby Port Royal, famous for its pirate history, and the Blue Mountains, known for their spectacular scenery and world-renowned coffee. Â
