History

San Francisco was officially established in 1776 when Spanish settlers founded a military outpost called the Presidio of San Francisco and Mission San Francisco de Asís. The city’s name comes from Saint Francis of Assisi, after whom the Spanish mission was named. In 1847, it was renamed San Francisco, and the discovery of gold in California the following year transformed it into a booming commercial and shipping centre as thousands of prospectors arrived during the Gold Rush.

Today, San Francisco is known for its iconic waterfront, historic neighbourhoods, cultural diversity, technology industry, and distinctive architecture. Its most recognizable landmark is the Golden Gate Bridge, alongside popular attractions such as Alcatraz Island, Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, and the winding streets of Lombard Street. With its famous hills, waterfront views, diverse food scene, and proximity to Silicon Valley, San Francisco remains one of California’s most popular destinations for tourism, culture, and business.

The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of San Francisco’s most iconic landmarks, stretching across the Golden Gate Strait and connecting San Francisco to Marin County. Visitors can walk or cycle across the bridge to enjoy spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco Bay, and the surrounding coastline.

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island is a historic San Francisco attraction best known for its former federal prison, which once held some of America's most notorious criminals. Visitors can take a ferry from Pier 33 to explore the former prison, discover its fascinating history through an audio tour, and enjoy panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline and bay.
