History
Kitchener was originally known as Ebytown, named after settler Benjamin Eby, before becoming Berlin in 1833, while neighbouring Waterloo developed as a separate settlement named after the famous Battle of Waterloo in Belgium. The arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century helped transform the region into an important centre for manufacturing, furniture production, and trade. In 1916, amid growing anti-German sentiment during the First World War, Berlin was renamed Kitchener after British military leader Lord Kitchener. Â
Today, Kitchener-Waterloo is known as a major technology and innovation hub, home to the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, and a thriving startup community. Popular attractions include Victoria Park, Waterloo Park, the historic St. Jacobs Farmers' Market, and the region's annual Oktoberfest celebrations, which highlight its German heritage and vibrant local culture.Â
