History
The city’s name comes from Mount Royal, the hill overlooking the city that was named by French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1535. Originally established as a French colonial settlement and missionary centre, Montreal quickly developed into an important fur trading post before coming under British control in 1760. During the 19th century, the city grew into one of Canada's leading industrial, commercial, and transportation centres, with its port playing a major role in international trade. Â
Today, Montreal’s history can be explored through landmarks such as Old Montreal, Notre-Dame Basilica, Mount Royal Park, and Pointe-à -Callière Museum, which marks the city's birthplace. As Quebec’s largest city, Montreal is known for its European-inspired architecture, vibrant arts and food scenes, historic neighbourhoods, festivals, and unique blend of French and English culture.Â
