History
Cancún's name comes from the Mayan language. Before becoming an international tourist destination, the area was largely undeveloped, with small fishing settlements, stretches of jungle, mangroves, and ancient Mayan archaeological sites. In the late 1960s, the Mexican government selected Cancún as the site for a major planned tourism development, with construction beginning in 1970. What began as a government-backed resort project quickly developed into one of Mexico’s most important tourism centres. Â
Today, Cancún is internationally known for its white-sand beaches, turquoise Caribbean waters, luxury resorts, lively nightlife, and all-inclusive vacation experiences. Popular attractions include Playa Delfines, known for its scenic ocean views; the lively Hotel Zone along Boulevard Kukulcán; and the Museo Maya de Cancún, which showcases the region’s Mayan history and archaeological discoveries. With its combination of Caribbean scenery, cultural experiences, and resort amenities, Cancún has become one of the world’s best-known beach holiday destinations.Â
Playa Delfines
Playa Delfines is one of Cancún, Mexico’s most beautiful public beaches, known for its soft white sand, turquoise Caribbean waters, and sweeping ocean views. Located in Cancún’s Hotel Zone, the beach is a popular spot for sunbathing, taking photos at the colourful Cancún sign, and enjoying the coastal scenery. Visitors can relax beneath the sun or take in the waves from the beach’s scenic viewpoints. With its natural beauty and easy access, Playa Delfines is a must-visit attraction for anyone exploring Cancún.
Chichén Itzá
Chichén Itzá is one of Mexico’s most famous archaeological sites, located on the Yucatán Peninsula within reach of Cancún on a popular day trip. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for El Castillo, the impressive pyramid built by the ancient Maya, along with temples, plazas, and other remarkable stone structures. Visitors can explore the historic complex and learn about Maya civilization, astronomy, and architectural achievements. For travellers seeking history and culture beyond Cancún’s beaches and resorts, Chichén Itzá offers an unforgettable experience.
