History
Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, traces its history back to 1325, when the ancient city of Tenochtitlan was founded on an island in Lake Texcoco. Following the Spanish conquest in 1521, Tenochtitlan was largely destroyed, and a new colonial city was built over its ruins. Mexico City became the political and administrative capital of New Spain and later remained the centre of government following Mexico’s independence in 1821. Over the centuries, it developed into one of the most influential cities in the Americas, with a mix of pre-Hispanic, colonial, and modern architecture shaping its identity. Â
Today, Mexico City is known for its rich history, world-class museums, vibrant food scene, architecture, and cultural attractions. Visitors can explore the iconic Palacio de Bellas Artes, Chapultepec Castle, the National Museum of Anthropology, and the colourful canals of Xochimilco, where traditional boats travel through historic waterways. Combining centuries of history with contemporary art, shopping, nightlife, and some of Mexico’s most celebrated cuisine, Mexico City is one of Latin America’s leading cultural and travel destinations.
