History
Fort Lauderdale was officially incorporated as a city in 1911 and takes its name from a series of military forts built in the area during the Second Seminole War in the 1830s, named after Major William Lauderdale. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway helped encourage settlement, trade, and development. Today, Fort Lauderdale is known for its beautiful Atlantic beaches, extensive canal system, boating culture, and waterfront lifestyle, earning it the nickname “Venice of America.” Popular attractions include Fort Lauderdale Beach, Las Olas Boulevard, and the Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District, which features museums, galleries, restaurants, and cultural venues.
