History

The city was named Charlotte Town in honour of Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, and officially became incorporated as a city in 1855. Originally established as an administrative and military centre, Charlottetown grew through shipbuilding, fishing, agriculture, and maritime trade.

Today, Charlottetown is known for its historic downtown, waterfront, and well-preserved Victorian architecture. Popular attractions include Province House National Historic Site, where the Confederation Conference took place, the Confederation Centre of the Arts, St. Dunstan’s Basilica, and Victoria Park. As Prince Edward Island’s capital, Charlottetown has evolved from a historic maritime trading and shipbuilding centre into a popular East Coast travel destination, known for its local seafood, cultural festivals, charming streets, and coastal scenery.

Thunder Cove and Teacup Rock

Thunder Cove and Teacup Rock are two of Prince Edward Island’s most striking natural attractions, located along the island’s western coastline. Discover the dramatic cliffs, sea caves, and sea stacks at Thunder Cove, shaped over time by wind and waves. Nearby, Teacup Rock stands out as a unique coastal rock formation popular with photographers, kayakers, and beach explorers. Together, these scenic spots offer a memorable way to experience PEI’s rugged coastline and natural beauty.
