History

Thunder Bay’s history dates back to the early 19th century, when European fur traders established trading posts along the shores of Lake Superior. The city takes its name from Thunder Bay, the large bay at the western end of Lake Superior, which was named for the powerful storms and thunder associated with the area. Its location along Lake Superior helped establish the city as an important gateway for shipping grain and other goods between Western Canada and international markets.

The city’s history can still be explored at Fort William Historical Park, a recreation of the early 19th-century fur trading post, and the historic waterfront at Marina Park. Over time, Thunder Bay has evolved from an industrial and transportation centre into a destination for tourism, education, healthcare, and outdoor recreation. Today, it is known for its spectacular Lake Superior scenery, hiking trails, waterfront attractions, and access to some of Northwestern Ontario’s most impressive natural landscapes.
